Local company matches world-class switching technology
Sunday Times - Business, June 23, 2002
Interblocks Ltd., a local financial IT solutions company has developed a new switching technology product that provides bank with a universal platform to connect all its delivery channels such as tellers, Internet banking, mobile banking and even ATM’s and kiosks.

However, this intermediary solution can be seen at work by normal users when they visit their ATM’s. Interblocks’ iSwitch will drive the newer web-based ATM’s to offer much more than cash. User’s will not only be able to withdraw cash, but perform transactions such as wire transfers, detailed statement viewing, product inquiries and while they are at it update themselves on the latest news and even do some Internet purchases.

The local company’s achievement can be considered remarkeable as it is only now that banks and retail store chains in the United States are moving into these new technology. Customers at 7-11 stores in Southwest Florida got ahead of the rest there in catching some of the new movie trailers by watching them on the stores' new Web-enabled ATM machines.

On the other hand, to banks the iSwitch brings about newer conveniences and control over their ATM’s. The administrators will not only be able to have real-time updates of the status of each ATM over their mobile phones but will also be able to start and shutdown the machine.

In Sri Lanka the iSwitch was recently commissioned to power the ATM’s of NDB Bank and the product is now live. The bank is also able to harness the power of the combination of the new ATM and the iSwitch as they are able to customize its entire functionality. This means that even though one or more banks use the same system, the entire look and feel varies from bank to bank.

“As a new bank building its distribution channels we are going with a click and mortar strategy. In each channel we look for unique features. Given that we don’t have legacy systems, we were able to take the software route in developing products that are very much more powerful. Interblocks demonstrated its capability and we are particularly happy to work with a Sri Lankan company delivering world-class technology” said Eran Wickramaratne, Chief Executive Officer of NDB Bank explaining the need for the new technology.

Dinesh Rodrigo, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Interblocks speaking on their achievement said, “The iSwitch stands up there with any other international product as the technology has shown. We are proud that two local banks have placed their confidence in our product over established international products”.

The new technology could also benefit many of the local banks that are increasing their ATM strength and promoting its usage especially in the outstation. “They can now provide more explicit instructions in the language of their choice and more graphical content as to how to operate the ATM on the screen itself. Although these are available in some of the existing machines, the customization is limited”, explained Faiq Faaiz, Director iBusiness Development at Interblocks.
